Attorney Bio
William B. Koontz joined Melone Hatley, P.C., in November 2024, bringing extensive experience in family law and complex custody litigation. Known for his client-centered approach, William has helped families navigate some of their most challenging times with compassion and dedication. Relying upon a multi-disciplinary approach to the law, William supports his clients throughout every phase of their legal journey with compassion and excellence.
Originally from Kamloops, British Columbia, William moved to Columbia, South Carolina, following his graduation from Davidson College in 2012. He has called the Carolinas home ever since, setting down roots with his spouse, Shannon D. Koontz, a Southern native.
William earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of South Carolina School of Law. While in law school, he clerked for Bluestein Attorneys, focusing on plaintiff’s litigation on the federal and state levels as well as appellate advocacy. He is a past vice president of Carolina Equality Alliance, and a member of Phi Delta Phi Legal Honor Society and the S.C. Association for Justice. He is a co-chair of the Wellness Committee for the S.C. Bar Young Lawyer’s Division and a member of the Publications Committee for the S.C. Bar. William has been recognized as a Legal Elite in family law for 2024 and received the Roberts Senior Class Writing Award for his work, “Responding to a Crisis in Legal Education with a Reformed Pedagogy: An Exploratory Platform for Research, Assessment, and Implementation of Intradisciplinary Approaches to Effective Legal Education.”
Outside of the office, William enjoys spending time with his family, orienteering in the wilderness, and contributing to professional and civic organizations that promote wellness and diversity in the legal field.
